6971, Sergeant, Robert Henry FROST
Aged 29

7th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Died of his Wounds on Wednesday 17th January 1916

An Old Contemptible

Born in Newmarket in Q3-1886 [Newmarket 3b:528] to Alfred and Angelina FROST (née ALLSOP) of Albion Street, Newmarket.(CWGC has his age at death as 34.)

1891 census...Robert Henry [4] was living at the Duddery (Albion Street being part of this area), Newmarket with his father Alfred [43], a mail cart driver born in Newmarket; his mother Angelina [41], born Nottingham; and his brother Alfred C.[14] groom born Rothley,Leics.

1901 census...Seems to be the Robert Frost aged 17 at Fort Albert, Alderney as a draper's assistant. Not clear if he was in the Army, it was a posting for the Suffolk Regiment certainly. His parents (father now a groundsman but more than likely this was Grocers Roundsman) were still at Stanley Road, Newmarket.

1911 census...Robert [25] was visiting the HILLS family,( head being Mary HILLS [44] married) at 18 Stanley Road, Newmarket.

His widower father Alfred was at 41 Granby Street with his son in law, James FORDHAM.

Robert was married in Q2-1915 in Newmarket to Mary HILLS b.14-4-1867) and their address was Ivy Cottage, Station Road, Newmarket. He was the brother in law of the two Fordham brothers, Albert [ died 1917 ] see here and James [ killed 1916 ] see here

Robert enlisted in Newmarket. He appears to have added to his age for military purposes which seems to indicate that he was in the Army in 1901 as if his first enlistment had been for WW1 there would be no need at all to falsify his age. The fact that he was an Old Contemptible also indicates he very possibly had previous military service. Bethune being the location in 1916 of HQ and hospital centre, without Robert's service records it is impossible to ascertain where he was wounded or when.

Robert is buried in Bethune Town Cemetery, France - Ref:IV.H.36
